Message You know me, I'm a bringer of news; good, bad, indifferent. If its worth something, I bring it to the table. So here goes....

This is the paragraph on the page for the JWT ECU upgrades.

"JWT's engine control units (ECUs) are used worldwide in all forms of competition. Specializing in Nissan/Infinity ECUs, our programs have earned a reputation for meticulous and complete tuning . An ECU contains much more than just the parameters for a single maximum-horsepower point. Tuning only in this single dimension - without regard for other attributes like throttle response, thermal control, or torque - simply is not optimized tuning! Our winning experience in off-road, rally, and road racing is present in every fully optimized ECU we offer. JWT engine control units are sold on an exchange basis and can be upgraded using your stock unit or we can send a finished unit on an exchange basis."

I want to specifically point out the line that states:
Tuning only in this single dimension - without regard for other attributes like throttle response, thermal control, or torque - simply is not optimized tuning!

Lets talk about optimized tuning... Running rich and having excessively retarded ignition timing is not optimized in my book. MAximum power is achieved with approx a 12.5:1 A/F ratio. 12:1 is a good A/F level for power AND safety.

I want to point something out about their comment on their ECU's tuning. They never once mention safety.

Earlier today I was noiticing that my car just wasn't making the power that it was a few days ago. The atmospheric conditions are identical today as they were a week ago and getting the wheels loose in 3rd gear was possible before, but I wasn't even seeing 2nd come loose for the past couple of days. I kinda shrugged it off and just didn't boost or anything.

Just a few hours ago I went out to a pool tournament (and won 2nd place out of 22 people BTW, $78 won! Woo Hoo!) and while I was waiting between games it dawned upon me: In my program, when there is a faulty sensor or the system is in limp mode (safety boost), my maps have ignition timing retarded and fuel delivery increased in the high load band. "Maybe I should check my codes..."

1st off, if you dont have a ConZult, YOU NEED ONE. They are awesome diag tools. One of the menu options is to check the error codes. So I get in the car and crank everything up. I run a self diagnostic. Just as I suspected. The ConZult is nice because it tells you what the error code means; it doesn't just spit out a number. Not only that, but it also tells you how long ago the fault was triggered. "Error Code: Detonation Sensor, 11 starts ago".

That's just about on target - I noticed a drop in performance about 2 days ago.. :)

So, I check my detonation sensor bypass resistor and sure enough, one of the leads had vibrated loose from the harness connector. So I reattached it. Another nice thing, the ConZult has the ability to erase the error codes. No more pulling battery terminals and playing the waiting game. So I erase the codes and continue my ride home - now with my 420HP restored.

So, I want to backtrack to the original purpose of this post. Had I been using a JWT program, I would never have known there was a problem. This is because the safety maps are identical to the 'normal' maps. So when the system finds a fault, it reverts to the safety maps which are the same in a JWT program.

Now this doesn't necessarily pose a problem if you are using boost jets. You WILL notice a drop in performance when it kicks into safety boost. However, with a boost controller, you would never know anything is wrong. If something critical was failing, you would just keep on boosting full potential and eventually something would give.

...our programs have earned a reputation for meticulous and complete tuning...
